Inevitably, they’ll put Ian into context with comparisons to other storms that have hit Florida and the United States. Scientists will likely study Ian for years to come. Ian followed the same path as 2004′s Hurricane Charley but was many times larger - producing more widespread winds and rain, in addition to its storm surge. Ian’s storm surge produced widespread and deadly flooding like 2005′s Hurricane Katrina, but Katrina’s death toll of around 1,800 was worsened by the failure of man-made levees built to protect low-lying Louisiana.Ian was estimated to have brought as much as a 12-foot wall of water to flood coastal communities. Hurricane Irma was a large slow-moving rainmaker like Ian, and produced just a 3- to 5-foot storm surge in Naples and Fort Myers in Florida.
